B.F.A. in Theatre with a Specialization in Musical Theatre

The B.F.A. in Theatre with a Specialization in Musical Theatre offers a comprehensive, conservatory-style training rooted in acting, voice and movement. From the first semester, students begin building a foundation across all three disciplines while exploring the physical, musical and stylistic demands of the form.

First Year
Musical Theatre students take core courses alongside other Theatre B.F.A. students, including Embodied Practice and Performance Practicum. Musical Theatre specific training includes foundational courses in Musicianship (music theory) and Piano. The first year focuses on building the physical, vocal and musical literacy necessary for advanced performance work in later years. Students also begin engaging in performance opportunities through the First Year Project, SMUST (ÃÛÌÒ½´Student Theatre) productions, and directing scenes, fostering early collaboration and practical experience.

Second Year
Training continues with Acting II, Musical Theatre Acting II, Song Performance II and advanced dance styles in Dance Styles II. Students begin integrating skills across disciplines, exploring transitions from scene to song and developing ensemble work. Students are eligible for casting in mainstage productions beginning this year. Additional performance opportunities include the Sophomore Performance Project, SMUST productions, and directing scenes, offering a wide range of creative outlets and the possibility of season casting.

Third Year
Students deepen their artistic voice through specialized courses including Scene-to-Song Techniques, Voice and Speech for the Actor, Musical Theatre History and Styles, and continued dance. They also begin preparing audition material for professional work, including solo and group performance projects across classical, contemporary and pop/rock genres. Performance work intensifies with season casting, the Junior Performance Project, continued participation in SMUST productions, and directing scenes, further developing their onstage presence and adaptability.

Fourth Year
Senior year focuses on professional readiness. Students complete a Capstone Audition and Showcase course, which includes audition coaching, digital portfolio development, networking with casting professionals, and a final showcase. Upper-level performance opportunities include season casting, potential external casting, and culminating work in SMUST productions and directing scenes. The year concludes with the Senior Showcase, providing a bridge to the professional industry.

Throughout the program, students train with nationally recognized faculty and guest artists, apply what they’ve learned from class on to the stage, participate in interdisciplinary workshops, and benefit from SMU’s deep connections with regional theatres such as Dallas Theater Center and Theatre Three.
