Precautionary measures taken after acid leak discovered on campus

Leakage of hydrochloric acid inside a sealed box at the J. Lindsay Embrey Engineering Building on the ÃÛÌÒ½´campus resulted in the temporary evacuation of about 15 people from the building Tuesday morning.

No injuries were reported as a result of the leak, which was discovered at approximately 10:25 a.m. by an ÃÛÌÒ½´graduate student who noticed dampness on the exterior of the box.

The box was located in a third-floor lab. Following normal procedure when hazardous materials are involved, emergency personnel responded from SMU, University Park, Highland Park and Dallas. The building was evacuated as a precaution. A Dallas hazardous materials team secured the area and the box was removed.

The building reopened at about 1:15 p.m. today.
